Our use of X: an update
On by Ella Ronan
In recent years, particularly following Musk’s take over, X (aka twitter) has become less useful platform to have conversations about current events, share messages and mobilise people to act for change. It's time to #StopBeingComplicit. For the best following experience, please follow us on Bluesky.
In August 2024, Musk’s Twitter/X, a now “despotic” and “miserable” corner of the internet, contributed to the onslaught of racist rioting that broke out in the UK.
Twitter/X was a key site of misinformation and hate behind the narratives that fuelled the narratives that riots. Elon Musk added fuel to the fire, tweeting “civil war is inevitable” and interacting with users spreading inflammatory and divisive content.
Twitter/X wants to present itself as the “world’s town square,” suggesting a safe place to learn, co-create, and build community. However, Musk does not promote these interactions, and this “world town square” is not welcoming or safe for many.
So, why don’t we just leave Twitter/X all together?
While we more than recognise Twitter/X is not what it used to be by any means, we have valuable connections and a great archive of our work there.
Musk’s power lies in the information we give him exclusively. This monopoly contributes to his economic and social power, which he consistently wields in unethical and harmful ways.
In a pledge to Stop Being Complicit, we will no longer give exclusives to Musk. We will not promote our Twitter account and will ensure our supporters get the same or better experience on Bluesky.
We ask our supporters and allies to do the same, find out more about why we are doing this here.
