Pregnant women and children are often the most vulnerable to serious health problems, but what happens when you live three days walk from the closest clinic? Or there simply aren’t enough trained health workers to support you through a difficult pregnancy?

Maternal health is a huge part of our work at Health Poverty Action. Not only do we support remote health facilities across Asia, Africa and Latin America, but we address the root causes of the problem – by tackling discrimination, by working alongside local government to improve infrastructure, and by providing training traditional birth attendants with the medical skills they need.

But we couldn’t do it without your support. That’s why we are launching our brand new campaign ‘It Takes a Village’ – to unite parents with a shared goal – to make pregnancy and childbirth safe for every mother. 

/ao’s Story

My name is /ao and I am from the village of /o!na in Tsumke, Namibia. I have one child and I am expecting my second. Today I was lucky to come to the clinic on the donkey cart. With my last child I delivered on the side of the road while walking to the clinic.

There are some people who don’t want to come to the clinic. We had a problem with a mother, because her baby was not moving or lying properly, and this caused the mother to die. That is why it is very important to come. I learned a lot about it from Health Poverty Action about the importance of having checkups, the danger signs in pregnancy, and family planning.

Health Poverty Action is funding donkey carts in remote villages in Namibia to ensure that pregnant women can reach health clinics, and access education on the importance of antenatal care. Just £10.40 could help to maintain a donkey cart to ensure that women like /ao can give birth in safe, sterile conditions.
